Overview

Kintamani sits on the rim of a large volcanic caldera in the highlands of Bali, at around 1,400 metres. From here you look across to Mount Batur, an active volcano, and the crescent-shaped Lake Batur below it. The air is cooler than on the coast, and lunch with a volcano view is a highlight for many guests.

On the way you stop at Tegalalang, where rice terraces step down a green valley, and at a coffee plantation to see how Balinese coffee, tea and spices are grown. Tasting luwak coffee is optional. The car is only for your group, and your driver doubles as a tour assistant who helps with tickets, photos and a good place to eat. The drive from South Bali to Kintamani takes around 2–2.5 hours, so this tour suits travellers who enjoy scenery and a relaxed pace. Clouds can cover the volcano, and the view is often clearer earlier in the day.

Frequently asked questions

Can we change the route?

Yes. You can skip a stop, stay longer at the view or add a place on the way, such as a temple or Ubud. Your driver will help you plan what fits.

Is this tour suitable for kids?

Yes. There is little hard walking, and children usually enjoy the rice terraces and plantation. The drive is about 2–2.5 hours each way, so plan breaks for small children.

Do we have to try luwak coffee?

No, it is optional and paid separately. Many guests just taste the regular coffees and teas.

What if it rains or the volcano is cloudy?

Light rain does not stop the tour, but clouds can hide Mount Batur. Your driver can change the order of stops to give you the best chance of a clear view.
