Nusa Penida Day Trip from Bali: West or East Tour?

  • October 7, 2026
  • 6 min read

For a Nusa Penida day trip, choose the west tour for Kelingking and Broken Beach, or the east tour for Diamond Beach, Atuh and the tree house. One side per day is best.

A Nusa Penida day trip from Bali usually means choosing between the west side and the east side of the island, because the roads are slow and both in one day is rushed. Choose the west tour for Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay. Choose the east tour for Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach and the tree house viewpoint. Both Yoi Bali tours are private, priced per person with the boat included: IDR 1,000,000 for the west tour and IDR 1,050,000 for the east tour.

This guide compares the two routes, explains what the day looks like, and shares tips to help you decide which side suits your group.

West or East Nusa Penida: quick comparison

West tour East tour
Main stops Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Crystal Bay Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach, tree house viewpoint
Best known for The famous T-Rex shaped cliff and natural rock pools White-sand coves below dramatic cliffs and quieter viewpoints
Crowds Usually busier, as it is the classic first-time route Often calmer, popular with repeat visitors
Walking Short walks at viewpoints; the Kelingking trail down to the beach is steep Steps down to Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach; can be tiring in the heat
Price IDR 1,000,000 per person, boat included IDR 1,050,000 per person, boat included

If this is your first visit and you want the views most people picture when they think of Nusa Penida, the west side is the natural choice. If you have seen the west before, or you prefer fewer crowds and beach views from above, the east side is a lovely alternative.

The Nusa Penida West day tour

The Nusa Penida West day tour covers the island’s most photographed places.

Kelingking Beach

The cliff shaped like a T-Rex head is the image most people know from Nusa Penida. The viewpoint at the top is a short walk from the parking area. The path down to the beach is very steep and rough, so most day visitors enjoy the view from the top and save their energy.

Broken Beach

Also called Pasih Uug, this is a round bay of turquoise water with a natural rock arch where the sea flows in. A walking path circles the top of the cliffs.

Angel’s Billabong

A natural rock pool right next to Broken Beach. It looks calm, but waves can surge over the rocks without warning, so it is best enjoyed from a safe distance and only entered when local staff and conditions say it is safe.

Crystal Bay

A sheltered beach with clear water, often used as a relaxed final stop before the boat back. It is a good place to sit in the shade and rest after a day of viewpoints.

The Nusa Penida East day tour

The Nusa Penida East day tour focuses on the island’s eastern coastline, where the beaches sit at the foot of tall limestone cliffs.

Diamond Beach

A white-sand beach reached by steps cut into the cliff. The view from the top is striking on its own, and the walk down rewards those who are comfortable with stairs.

Atuh Beach

Next to Diamond Beach, Atuh is a quiet bay with rock formations offshore. It is a pleasant place for a drink and a rest in the shade.

The tree house viewpoint

A wooden tree house perched on a hill above the coast, with a wide view over the sea and cliffs. It is a popular photo spot and usually one of the highlights of the east route.

What a Nusa Penida day trip looks like

The day is long but simple. A typical flow looks like this:

  1. Early pick-up in Bali. Your driver collects you at about 06:00 to 06:30 from hotels in South Bali (Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur and Uluwatu), and a little earlier from Ubud.
  2. Fast boat to Nusa Penida. Boats usually leave from the Sanur area, and the crossing takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the sea. The return boat with a licensed fast-boat operator from Sanur harbour is included in the price; the boat is shared with other passengers, while your cars on Bali and on the island stay private.
  3. Private car on the island. A car and driver take your group around the stops on your chosen side.
  4. Lunch break. Lunch at a local restaurant (Indonesian set menu) is included, as are entrance and parking fees at the stops.
  5. Afternoon boat back to Bali and drop-off at your hotel.

Plan on a full day. Roads on Nusa Penida are narrow, winding and in places rough, so even short distances can take a while. This is the main reason we recommend one side per day rather than trying to see everything.

Tips for your Nusa Penida trip

  • Wear good shoes. Sandals with grip or trainers are better than flip-flops on dusty, uneven paths.
  • Bring sun protection. Hat, sunscreen and sunglasses; there is little shade at many viewpoints.
  • Carry water and some cash. Small rupiah notes are handy for the island levy, drinks and toilets.
  • Pack light. A small backpack with a towel, a change of clothes and a dry bag for your phone is enough.
  • Think about motion sickness. The boat crossing can be bumpy; take something beforehand if you are sensitive.
  • Respect the sea. Waves on Nusa Penida’s south and west coasts can be strong. Swim only where it is clearly safe.
  • Check the weather. Boats may be delayed or cancelled in rough seas. If the boat is cancelled because of weather or sea conditions, you choose a free new date or a full refund.

Which tour should you choose?

  • Choose West if it is your first visit, you want Kelingking Beach, or you have only one day for Nusa Penida.
  • Choose East if you have already seen the west, you prefer quieter spots, or you love beaches seen from high cliffs.
  • Do both on two separate days if you have the time; each side deserves a relaxed day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see both west and east Nusa Penida in one day?

It is possible but rushed, because the island’s roads are slow and the stops are far apart. Most travellers enjoy the day more by choosing one side, or by doing west and east on two separate days.

Which side of Nusa Penida is better for a first visit?

The west side, because it includes Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay, the island’s best-known sights.

Is the boat included in the Nusa Penida day tour?

Yes. Both the west and east day tours with Yoi Bali include the boat, and are priced at IDR 1,000,000 per person for the west tour and IDR 1,050,000 per person for the east tour. The small Nusa Penida tourist levy is paid separately at the harbour.

How long is the boat ride to Nusa Penida?

The fast boat crossing from the Sanur area usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, depending on sea conditions.

Is a Nusa Penida day trip suitable for children or older travellers?

Yes, if you keep to the top viewpoints. The steep paths down to Kelingking Beach and Diamond Beach are best skipped by young children and anyone with knee or balance concerns. There is no minimum age for the boat, and infants can travel on a parent’s lap, but pregnant guests and anyone with back problems should avoid the fast boat.
